Critical minerals: Africa holds the key to a sustainable energy future

Africa’s vast deposits of minerals critical to the global energy transition, such as cobalt, copper and lithium, can drive a sustainable energy future, said UN Secretary-General for Trade and Development Rebeca Grynspan.

He spoke during an event held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and online on June 4 as part of the organization’s 60th anniversary celebrations. The event, titled “Maximizing Africa’s Potential: Harnessing Demand for Critical Minerals to Drive Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development,” explored ways to optimize the benefits of these minerals for development. “Cobalt, manganese, graphite and lithium are not just elements of the periodic table,” Grynspan said.
