COP30, Belém: urgent decisions to reduce_CO2 emissions

It is possible that it will be held in Ethiopia, an election approved by African countries during the Belém summit. Dozens of demonstrators stormed the restricted area of the UN climate conference on Tuesday (November 11) to protest against the impact of global warming on people’s health.

Third day of work within the framework of COP30. The absence of the United States is being felt at the climate change summit being held in Belém, Brazil. The main concern of analysts is the difficulty of moving forward without the participation of such an influential country, both because of its historical responsibility for air pollution and because of the decisions it must take to reduce its CO₂ emissions. The focus of this edition is on drawing conclusions, taking stock and approving the Updated National Plans, which describe each country’s contribution to preserving life on the planet. For Palau’s ambassador, Ilana Seid, president of the Alliance of Small Island States, the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement “really changed the axis of the negotiations”. Expectations in Belém point to a closing without major surprises, although with a taste of a lost opportunity. The United States is one of the four countries absent; the others are San Marino, Afghanistan and Myanmar. For the other countries gathered at the gates of the Amazon, the starting point is clear: to reduce fossil fuel emissions, the main cause of global warming.
