How Land Use and Climate Change Scenarios Can Help Protect Biodiversity

• Biodiversity and ecosystem services (ESLs) are increasingly threatened by land use and climate change.
• Vision 2050 for Biodiversity aims to protect and restore these vital systems.
• Here are a series of scenarios that examine environmental challenges to improve land use and strengthen climate resilience.

Ecosystem services are nature’s contribution to humanity’s needs: the supply of drinking water, the regulation of air and climate, protection against risks and diseases, among others. In addition, nature awakens inspiration in people and creates a sense of place. Biodiversity, i.e. the diversity of genes, species, landscapes and their interactions, underpins these ecosystem services and is one of the most powerful levers for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
