• The European Commission proposes to contribute 4,000 million euros to the financing of the ITER project, the “most ambitious initiative in the world” in this field
• Nuclear fusion is getting closer: scientists make a breakthrough to make it more efficient
The European Commission is proposing to allocate 5,400 million euros to nuclear fusion research as part of its proposal for the EU’s long-term budget, which will cover the period 2028-2034 and which it has completed on Wednesday with the publication of the last pieces of legislation that make it up. Specifically, Brussels proposes to contribute 4,000 million to the financing of the ITER project, the “most ambitious initiative in the world” in this field and which explores the viability of nuclear fusion as a “large-scale and carbon-free energy source”, while another 1,400 million will finance internal projects in this area. Both allocations are part of the EURATOM Research and Training Programme, which will have a budget of 6,700 million euros until 2032 and which includes, in addition to the two previous items, another 760 million euros for actions related to nuclear energy by the EU Joint Research Centre (JRC, in English) and 590 million for research in the field of nuclear fusion. The amount allocated to activities related to atomic energy is completed with another 1,000 million that will finance a new budget program focused on nuclear safety both in Europe and in third countries.
