Biden reincorporates the United States into the Paris Agreement on climate change

The president of the United States, Joe Biden, has signed on the first day of his mandate, dated January 20, 2021, a long series of executive orders of importance (see in La Vanguardia), among which stands out a text in which he declares, on behalf of his country, that he accepts the Paris Agreement and “each of the articles and clauses” of this important agreement to combat climate change.

As highlighted by the White House through its new profile on social networks, Joe Biden’s statement on this section and the corresponding executive decree will be concretized with the sending to the UN of a letter of petition with the aim of “rejoining [al Acuerdo de París] 30 days later”.

“Our nation will once again be in a position to play a role in global leadership in advancing the goals set out in the Agreement [de París], including keeping the world at a safe temperature,” said one of the notes on the official White House Twitter account.

“Acceptance on behalf of the United States of America.

I, Joseph R. Biden Jr., President of the United States of America, having seen and considered the Paris Agreement, signed in Paris on December 12, 2015, hereby accept that Agreement and every article and clause thereof on behalf of the United States of America.

Signed in Washington on January 20, 2021.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has congratulated Joe Biden on his swift commitment to the Paris Agreement, including a note on his Twitter account in which he states that, “with all countries fully committed, we have a real opportunity to prevent climate catastrophe and embark on a transformative #AcciónClima.”

Statement of Intent

In the “Immediate Priorities of the Biden-Harris Administration” section described on the White House website, the second point refers to Climate in these terms: “President Biden will take swift action to address the climate emergency. The Biden administration will ensure that we meet the demands of science, as we empower American workers and businesses to lead the clean energy revolution.”

Keystone XL Pipeline Brake

The return to the Paris Agreement has not been the only decision in favor of the environment taken by Joe Biden on his first day in office.

As several of his collaborators had advanced (see in La Vanguardia), the new tenant of the White House has also signed on January 20 an executive decree by which the contracts and concessions for the construction of section 4 of the Keystone XL pipeline are paralyzed.
