US President Joe Biden has assured that his administration’s commitment to combating climate change is “unwavering” and that he is in a position to say that his country will meet its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
This was stated in Sharm-El Sheik (Egypt) where the XXVII Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) is held, where he has guaranteed that the United States is determined to achieve a safer, cleaner planet for all and fulfill the path marked by the Paris Climate Agreement and has reiterated that its commitments expressed at the last COP26 in Glasgow are firm.
The US president has expressed his desire to alleviate the country’s concerns that could arise regarding climate commitment after the midterm elections held in recent days.
“We have shown that a good climate policy is a good economic policy,” Biden has defended, who said that “today, finally” thanks to the actions taken by his administration “can tell you as the president of the United States of America and with confidence, that his country will achieve its emissions targets planned for 2030.
“The United States is putting its money where its words say” and has detailed the policies of its administration.
It urged all countries to redouble their efforts in this area and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by this decade.
The president has set out his commitments to reduce emissions of methane in his country, one of the gases with the greatest polluting potential, and will promote solutions to support forests in Africa and beyond.
In addition, it has pledged in Egypt to contribute its fair share in 2024 to the adaptation fund for developing countries, a decade after the United States and other developed countries pledged $100 billion annually to build green infrastructure to adapt to torrential rains. fending off heat waves and drought, exacerbated by climate change.
“The turbulence we are seeing around the world, especially following Russia’s brutal attack on Ukraine, is exacerbating food shortages, causing energy cost spikes, increasing volatility in energy markets and increasing global inflation,” he said.
However, he added in his speech in which he confessed “optimistic” that, against this “backdrop it is more urgent than ever to redouble climate commitments.”
In his view, Russia’s war only increases the urgency of the world’s necessary transition away from its dependence on fossil fuels.
By 2024, it has pledged $11.4 billion in climate finance, out of the $100 billion pledged by the international community for adaptation. Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State for Climate Change John Kerry warned Tuesday that the money would not arrive if Republicans regained control of the Senate in the midterm elections.
In any case, Biden has pointed out that to permanently bend the emissions curve, each country has to increase its commitment.
The president has reviewed the worst effects of climate change in the form of floods, droughts, heat waves in different areas of the world that show that the climate crisis is a problem of national security, environmental security, economic security, physical security.
In this way, it has reiterated its sure commitment to fight against the climate emergency to achieve a cleaner and safer planet for all and has defined the progress of the last two years in its own country and the actions that will be deployed with different levels of investment at national level in renewable energies, electrification, energy efficiency, emission reduction, industry transformation, improvement of smart agriculture.
“My administration is putting the United States on the path to meet its climate commitments by 2030 and today I can tell you with confidence that the United States will fulfill its commitments by 2030,” said Biden, who recalled that in 1986 he introduced as a senator the first climate legislation in his country. “Today as president of the United States, I can say with confidence that we will achieve our reduction targets in 2030.”
The president also referred to committed young people, civil society and activists in his country and around the world and how they have conveyed that action is urgent and a responsibility of those who are governing today.
“The challenge we have is great, but our capacity is greater than the challenge. We must never doubt it,” said the US president who urges to take the future of the world in hand and achieve the world that is desired.
“We now know we need a preserved planet. There are opportunities to achieve a more prosperous, stable and just world for our children. That is why we are here, that is why we are working for the world and we must do it together and confidently,” he concluded.
