10 years of the Paris Agreement… butCO2 emissions will reach an all-time high in 2025

According to new research from the Global Carbon Project, global carbon emissions from fossil fuels are projected to increase by 1.1% by 2025, reaching an all-time high. The Global Carbon Budget for 2025 projects 38.1 billion tonnes of fossil carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions this year. The decarbonization of energy systems is advancing in many countries, but this is not enough to offset the growth in global energy demand. This year’s report, published alongside a new paper in the journal Nature, examines the impact of climate change on terrestrial and ocean carbon sinks. It concludes that 8% of the increase in atmospheric CO₂ concentration since 1960 is due to the weakening of these sinks by climate change. The report states that the remaining carbon budget to limit global warming to 1.5°C is “virtually depleted”.
