Spain is the fourth country in the EU with the most green business investments

Spain was last year the fourth EU country with the highest sustainable investments in proportion to the total corporate financing of its companies, only behind the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany, according to the European Commission. The EU taxonomy is a voluntary market transparency tool that helps companies and investors identify environmentally sustainable economic activities to make sustainable investment decisions. This system now includes 242 activities covering 16 economic sectors. Its main objective is to prevent greenwashing and channel public and private investment towards the ecological transition.

Under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive, companies must report in their annual reports the extent to which their activities are covered by the EU taxonomy and conform to the criteria set out in the delegated acts of that system. According to data from the European Commission, capital investments in activities aligned with the taxonomy amounted to €323.8 billion. The energy sector accounted for the largest share of that figure (€168 billion), driven mainly by utilities. The cumulative value in sustainable investments since 2021 amounts to €1.22 trillion. Those sustainable investments have maintained an upward trajectory over the years. In 2025, companies based in the Netherlands reported the highest green taxonomy-aligned investments relative to total corporate investment (20.2%), ahead of Denmark (20.0%), Germany (18.6%) and Spain (15.6%).
