IATA calls on governments to strengthen global framework for aviation emissions

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has marked the tenth anniversary of the resolution of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly establishing the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), calling on governments to strengthen the foundations of this historic step in the decarbonization of aviation.

Adopted at the 2016 ICAO Assembly, the CORSIA agreement established the first global market-based measure for an industrial sector and was an important follow-up to the Paris Agreement, signed a year earlier. Currently, more than 130 countries participate in CORSIA, and by the end of this year the program is expected to have mitigated approximately 200 million tons of CO2. It is estimated that, from 2027, CORSIA will cover approximately 85% of global emissions. By the end of the program, up to $120 billion in climate finance could be mobilized to support emissions reduction and carbon removal projects globally.
