The European Commission eventually adopted the revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard (VS).

Dear all,

The European Commission finally adopted the revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) and the Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard (VS), published on 21 September in the Official Journal of the EU.

The adoption of the Voluntary Standards represents an important step in supporting the development of proportionate and practical sustainability reporting for companies with fewer than 1,000 employees, providing them with a voluntary framework for structuring and communicating relevant sustainability information.

On the other hand, Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/1563, which amends Delegated Regulation (EU) 2023/2772, consolidates the revision of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

Among the main changes: significant reduction of mandatory data points, simplification of materiality assessment, greater flexibility and new exemptions and progressive implementation, as well as a clearer structure of standards.

Now what?
The revised ESRS will apply to financial years starting on or after 1 January 2027; the first mandatory reports under the revised rules are due in 2028.
Companies included in the scope of the CSRD will report in accordance with the revised ESRS standards from the financial year 2027, while those outside the scope will be able to use the voluntary sustainability reporting standards.

How can the Business and Climate Foundation help you?
The simplification of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) does not eliminate the need for strong sustainability governance, and we at the FEC can help you prepare for the implementation of the new standards and the application of the voluntary standard, by producing clear and decision-ready sustainability reports.
