A European project will give industrialCO2 a second life as a sustainable fuel for aircraft and ships

The project is currently in the construction and commissioning phase of three pilot plants that will be tested at the Eleusis refinery in Greece, owned by the company Hellenic Energy.
A European project with the outstanding participation of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) will transform industrial carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions into sustainable fuels for aviation and maritime transport, an initiative that seeks to accelerate the decarbonisation of two of the most difficult sectors to electrify. The initiative, called STEROPE, has a budget of seven million euros and will develop and validate in real conditions a technology capable of converting gases from refineries into low-emission synthetic fuels. The project is currently in the construction and commissioning phase of three pilot plants that will be tested at the Eleusis refinery in Greece, owned by the company Hellenic Energy, which also coordinates the European consortium. The aim is to demonstrate the industrial viability of a technological route capable of producing e-methanol for maritime use and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from the CO2 generated by the refining facilities themselves.
