The Senate urges the Government to repeal the nuclear calendar and paralyze the closure of Almaraz with votes from the PP, Vox and UPN

Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy have asked to extend the Almaraz operation until 2030.
The Senate has urged the Government to “immediately” repeal the nuclear closure schedule and to paralyze the closure protocol of the Almaraz plant (Extremadura) scheduled for 2027 and 2028 “in light of the new energy, geopolitical and socio-economic context, ensuring that any decision on the future of the facility is taken on the basis of technical criteria, scientific and economic.”
It has done so with 145 votes in favor (PP, Vox and UPN), 106 against and five abstentions in the framework of the plenary session held this Wednesday. The motion, presented by the PP, in turn asks the Executive to process “urgently” the request for the extension of the Almaraz operating license before the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) and to commit to respecting the opinion of this body as a “binding technical basis for the government decision”.
In this regard, it also calls on the Government to ensure that the “critical deadline” of autumn 2026 is not exceeded without a clear resolution that preserves the operational viability of the facility without interruptions. Iberdrola, Endesa and Naturgy have asked to extend the Almaraz operation until 2030. Currently, the CSN is studying the feasibility of this request from the point of view of nuclear safety.
