The European Union has approved an amendment to the emissions regulation for heavy-duty vehicles that softens the progressive reduction of CO₂ between 2026 and 2029, allowing manufacturers to accumulate emission credits before 2030.
The European Parliament had already given the green light a few weeks ago and now the Council of the European Union has confirmed the modification of the EU regulation on the calculation of emission credits for heavy vehicles. With this final approval, the new regulation will be able to enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. The change introduces greater flexibility in meeting CO₂ emission reduction targets for truck and other heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers, at a time marked by the economic slowdown, the energy transition and the high cost of electrification of heavy transport.
What is the emission reduction calendar for trucks?
The European regulation on CO₂ emissions for heavy-duty vehicles will be reviewed again in 2027, although the current framework maintains the objectives already defined by Brussels.
