Europe will not reach its climate targets at the current rate

Funcas experts say that decarbonisation is progressing, but not enough, even in Spain.

The European Union will find it difficult to meet its climate targets if it does not decisively accelerate the pace of emission reductions. That is the main conclusion of the latest issue of Papeles de Economía Española, published by Funcas, which analyses the extent to which reality fits the roadmap set towards climate neutrality. The monograph, entitled “Transition to climate neutrality: objectives and reality” and coordinated by María J. Moral, recalls that the EU has set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, with a particularly demanding intermediate milestone: to cut emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990. The work gathered agrees that measures are being taken, but also that progress is still insufficient. On a global scale, Gerard Llobet highlights that the world economy has become less energy-intensive, although economic and demographic growth continues to put upward pressure on emissions. While developed economies, such as the EU or the United States, have managed to reduce their per capita emissions, developing countries such as China or India have increased their weight in the global total as their population and economic activity grow.
