Colbún’s project is the first in the world authorized to sell carbon credits under the Paris Agreement

The meeting between the generator and the Foundation for Climate Protection and Carbon Offsetting KliK, a Swiss private entity that finances international projects to offset CO2 emissions, was held at Colbún’s offices. The focus of the event was to deepen collaboration on projects to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Chile, share experiences and review progress in initiatives related to the energy transition. This exchange is part of the goal of the KliK Foundation – created in 2012 by Avenergy Suisse – to comply with the industry’s legal obligation to offset emissions from motor fuels. To this end, the Foundation finances climate protection activities that demonstrably reduce greenhouse gases. The meeting addressed the pioneering role of the Diego de Almagro Sur (DAS) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project, the first energy storage initiative in the world authorized to sell carbon credits under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement for use in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), climate commitments that countries define and report to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and advance in mitigating change climate. From the KliK Foundation, the director of Carbon Procurement, Joachim Sell, stressed the unprecedented nature of the project. “I am convinced that projects such as BESS DAS will help address challenges in the Chilean electricity system, such as reducing renewable energy discharges and displacing power generation through fossil fuels.”
