A scientific study warns of one of the consequences of climate change for human health

The researchers allude to the global rise in temperatures, which could lead to hundreds of thousands of premature deaths due to the inability to perform physical exercise.

Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing humanity. As the years go by, the average temperature of the Earth increases. That means that there are more and more months where the thermometers mark unusual degrees for the season. This is affecting people’s lives. But it could have another consequence directly related to physical health. Researchers from the Catholic University of Argentina have carried out a scientific study, published in the journal The Lancet Global Health, which warns that millions of adults will stop doing physical activities by 2050. The main reason is the rise in temperatures. There will be more and more months that have an average of 27.8 degrees. That would cause inactivity to rise by up to 1.5 percentage points on average. The most serious conclusion of the research is that it is related to premature deaths. Such physical inactivity would cause the number of deaths to also rise. The numbers they have estimated are between 0.47 and 0.70 million premature deaths. In addition, the loss of productivity would cause losses of up to 3,680 million dollars. To carry out this study, members of the Catholic University of Argentina have analyzed up to 156 countries. “The model examined the relationship between the primary outcome (the age-standardized prevalence of physical inactivity in adults (≥18 years) and annual exposure to different temperature ranges,” the publication says in the introductory part.
