Germany relies on nuclear energy again and will host Europe’s first fusion power plant in Bavaria

The facility is planned to be located at the former Gundremmingen power plant, which is considered particularly suitable for the development of nuclear power and will host Europe’s first fusion power plant in Bavaria.

Proxima Fusion, the fastest-growing fusion energy company in Europe, has signed together with the Free State of Bavaria, the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP) and RWE a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the aim of connecting the first fusion power plant based on advanced magnetic fusion technology to the grid as soon as possible. Fusion energy is a clean, safe and controllable source, capable of being produced constantly and virtually independently of limited access to raw materials. In addition, it strengthens Europe’s energy sovereignty and industrial competitiveness and, unlike nuclear fission, does not generate long-lived radioactive waste. The MoU sets out a clear roadmap towards Europe’s first magnetic fusion power plant, “Stellaris”. It is planned to be built on the former site in Gundremmingen (Bavaria). RWE is currently decommissioning the decommissioned nuclear power plant, creating space for Europe’s first fusion power plant. Under the agreement, the partners will work together on adapting the existing infrastructure. RWE brings to the alliance its extensive experience in the operation of power plants, a global industrial network and deep operational and licensing knowledge. This will enable significant cost and lead time advantages in the global race to build the first fusion plant. The construction of the first fusion reactor in Germany is included in the coalition program of the federal government and supported by the German High-Tech Agenda and the Fusion Action Plan.
