The UfM demands urgent action at COP30 to mitigate climate change in the Mediterranean

The UfM calls for urgent measures against climate change at COP30 given the critical state of the Mediterranean.

In the context of COP30, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) together with the network of Mediterranean Scientists on Climate and Environmental Change (MedECC), have demanded the urgent and coordinated implementation of actions against climate change, given the “critical” situation facing the Mediterranean.

From Bethlehem (Brazil), the UfM Deputy Secretary General, Grammenos Mastrojeni, and the EFIMED Principal Scientist, Magda Bou Dagher Kharrat, highlighted at a press conference the relevance of the Mediterranean Pavilion as a “platform to project a unified Mediterranean voice and give visibility to a region that often goes unnoticed in international negotiations”.
In addition, they presented recent scientific data showing an average temperature increase in the region of +1.5 °C, with projections that could reach between +2.2 °C and +5.6 °C by 2100, depending on emission levels.

They also warned of a possible reduction in rainfall of between 10% and 30%, which would intensify the already worrying water stress in agriculture, energy and urban systems, in addition to the acceleration in the loss of biodiversity in terrestrial and marine ecosystems due to the pressure of human activities.
