COP30: Historic declaration signed to combat climate change misinformation

The document seeks to combat false content online and social media and to end attacks on journalists and scientists who produce evidence-based information.
Twelve countries on Wednesday signed a joint declaration to tackle climate change disinformation and strengthen the integrity of information in the global public debate at the 30th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP30) on Climate Change in Belém, Brazil.

The initiative, called the Global Initiative for the Integrity of Climate Change Information, was promoted by the Brazilian government together with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The coalition brings together governments, multilateral agencies, civil society organizations, universities, and the private sector to ensure that communication on the climate crisis is based on scientific evidence, transparency, and international cooperation. The document calls for concrete measures to combat false content online and end deliberate attacks on environmental journalists, scientists and researchers who produce evidence-based information.

The statement was supported by Brazil, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Uruguay, the Netherlands and Belgium.
