Global_CO2 emissions to reach record high in 2024: report

Global carbon dioxide emissions, including those from burning fossil fuels, will reach a record high this year, pushing the world away from the possibility of avoiding more destructive extreme weather events, scientists said on Wednesday.

The Global Carbon Budget report, released during the UN’s COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, notes that global CO₂ emissions will amount to 41.6 billion metric tons in 2024, up from 40.6 billion last year.

Most of these emissions come from the combustion of coal, oil and gas. According to the report, those emissions will amount to 37.4 billion tonnes in 2024, 0.8% more than in 2023. The rest comes from land use, a category that includes deforestation and forest fires. The report, produced by more than 80 institutions, has been led by the British University of Exeter.
