The first European law that requires nature to be restored comes into force tomorrow

The Nature Restoration Law, the first law in the history of the European Union that will oblige its countries to restore nature and not only protect it, will come into force this Sunday after having been close to derailing in its processing.

The legislation faced obstacles both in the European Parliament, due to the opposition of the European People’s Party, and in the Council – an institution in which the governments of the Twenty-seven are represented – due to a sudden change of position by Hungary.

The entry into force of the regulation represents a “new step forward in the effort to reverse the deterioration of nature, achieve climate neutrality and strengthen Europe’s preparedness and resilience to the effects of climate change,” the European Commission said in a statement.
