Spain officially proposes Teresa Ribera as a candidate for EU commissioner

The current third vice-president and minister of the areas of Environment and Energy was the great favourite for the Spanish candidacy, although now she will have to submit to the will of the European Parliament.

The Government of Spain has today officially transferred to the European Commission the candidacy of the current Third Vice-President and Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, as Commissioner in Ursula von der Leyen’s new Executive.
The government led by Pedro Sánchez has sent Ribera’s candidacy by letter on Wednesday, the sources indicated.
The current third vice-president and minister of the areas of Environment and Energy, head of the PSOE list in the last European elections although she did not collect the minutes, was the great favorite for the Spanish candidacy.
Ribera has support within the Union, as she is seen as a community benchmark in energy and the environment, in part because of her involvement in policies such as the Iberian exception or the gas cap, which served as an economic counterweight to the effects of the war in Ukraine.
The new European Commission would theoretically take office on 1 December.
