Waste heat from the urban subsoil can be used to decarbonise cities

A research team from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) and the Madrid Subterra Association is studying the feasibility of using non-conventional energy sources, such as waste heat from metro stations, tunnels and water pipes, to improve the energy efficiency of cities. Among other things, their research suggests that energy from household wastewater can be used to save more than 50% of the heating energy bill of these homes, and that more than 1,000 people could be supplied with domestic hot water for a year with waste heat from small metro stations.
