The European Union will make a “substantial” financial contribution to the COP28 loss and damage fund

The institutions of the European Union and its member states will make a “substantial financial contribution” to the loss and damage fund to be negotiated at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, European Commissioner for Climate Action Wopke Hoekstra announced on Monday.

After meeting COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber in Brussels, Hoekstra said in a joint statement that the EU and its member states will make “a substantial financial contribution” to the loss and damage fund “in the context of an ambitious outcome at COP28 on mitigation, adaptation and means of implementation in a way that leaves no one behind.”
