Europe bids farewell to air conditioning fumes

A timetable is set for replacing synthetic HFCs with natural alternatives such as propane or ammonia, gases with less global warming potential, but flammable and toxic.

Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). These are names that probably mean little to the average passer-by, even if it is mentioned that they are types of fluorinated gases. However, this family is part of our daily lives on a massive scale. Fluorinated gases are used as refrigerants in air conditioning equipment, heat pumps, large chambers that keep the air cool in supermarkets, and are also used in thermal insulation and fire extinguishing systems and even in ventolin for medical use.
