UK to invest €22.7 billion in technology to ‘sequester’ and store carbon in natural spaces while continuing to extract gas and oil from the North Sea

The debate is hotter than ever. The UK’s firm commitment to “carbon capture and storage” (CCS) has caused a division of opinion among scientists. Some believe that technologies to “sequester” CO₂ are necessary to mitigate climate change. Others believe that this is an excessively expensive and not sufficiently tested solution that would allow gas and oil to continue burning as before.
