Spain contributes 30 million euros to alleviate climate change disasters

The government has agreed to allocate 30 million euros to the United Nations Adaptation Fund to help “mitigate the suffering associated with the effects of climate change.”

It was announced by the third vice president and minister for the Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, at the press conference after the Governing Council that on Tuesday approved this economic aid to face what she described as “great threat for which there is no deadline, but a need for urgent response”.

International cooperation

According to Ribera, “economic adaptation to the effects of climate change is perhaps one of the poor sisters in international cooperation, but absolutely critical for building resilience and mitigation” of the often devastating effects associated with climate change.

In this regard, he recalled that the meteorological summer in Spain has been “exceptional” due to high temperatures and drought, but has also had serious effects in other parts of the world, such as “dramatic floods” that have caused more than 1,300 deaths in Bangladesh or more than 1,100 in Pakistan.

A scenario of extreme temperatures, droughts and floods that, said the minister, “requires investment so that there is a better preparation to face the effects and impacts” derived from climate change.
