Agriculture, both victim and responsible for climate change, will have its day this Saturday at the COP27 climate summit, as one of the most complex elements to analyze and in which issues also vital to humanity such as food security come into play.
The devastating impacts that climate change is having on food production and the knowledge that extreme weather events already occurring across the planet are growing in intensity and frequency jeopardize the ability to produce food, particularly intensely in developing countries and vulnerable communities.
And yet, agriculture and livestock are two of the most responsible elements when it comes to emitting greenhouse gases, deforestation and soil degradation, and a vital industry for many countries in the Global South that depend almost exclusively on farms for their economic stability.
The focus of the day will be the debate on the adaptation and resilience of agricultural producers in the face of climate shocks, as well as initiatives to increase financial contributions to achieve this transformation, particularly in the most vulnerable countries.
Announcements are also expected on initiatives that seek to combat the negative confluence of political conflict, climate change, natural disasters and environmental degradation, an issue that is increasingly urgent and also encourages food insecurity and vulnerability.
Technologies for adaptation, a vital necessity for finding solutions, particularly if they can be easily transferred to the developing world, will be another topic at the meeting.
Food security in Africa, the region most vulnerable to the ravages of climate change, will also play a leading role on this day.
From the opposite focus, Latin American food-producing countries will present their case in defense of the agricultural industry and the need not to link their emissions to those of other polluting industries, but not vital for the subsistence of the planet like theirs.
