Spain joins ‘Accelerating to Zero’, a coalition of 200 countries that will only sell electric cars in 2035

Spain has joined Accelerating to Zero, a coalition of 200 countries that commit to only selling zero-emission vehicles by 2035. The signing of the adhesion to the initiative has taken place within the framework of the International Climate Summit (COP27) that is being held these days in Egypt.

Accelerating to Zero (A2Z) is an alliance involving countries, manufacturers and other automotive organizations with a common goal: to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles.

Only electric vehicles in 2035

The coalition that Spain has joined arises as a result of the agreements reached at the previous United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26) and sets two goals: that in 2035 only electric vehicles are sold in the main markets of the world and that this same happens throughout the planet in 2040.

“We welcome the fact that Spain has decided to join the coalition; the country’s commitment to sell only electric cars and vans from 2035 seems clear,” said Carlos Rico, head of car electrification at the European association Transport & Environment in Spain.

The countries, manufacturers and organizations that join the coalition for the promotion of zero emission vehicles (those that achieve the DGT Zero environmental label) commit to implement the necessary measures to advance in the transition to low emissions.

For Carlos Rico, in the case of Spain, the impulse of electric cars involves improving the charging infrastructure and creating green taxation.

It also seems necessary to work on the decarbonization of freight transport. And, although in our country buses and trucks account for only 2% of vehicles in circulation, they are responsible for 28% ofCO2 emissions.

Buses and trucks

In this sense, the request of the European association is to extend the ban on the sale of combustion cars in 2035 to the heavy vehicle market.

“Defining for trucks a target of a 100% reduction inCO2 emissions by 2035 would help Europe and Spain to get the last diesel vehicles off the road in time to avoid climate catastrophe,” they say from T&E.
