Report of the European Environment Agency on the economic and environmental benefits of the use of circular material, and, therefore, a promising tool for sustainable development.
Encouraging the use of circular material requires a broad system perspective and broad stakeholder engagement. The complete life cycle of the product, including the phases of design, production, consumption and waste, must be approached in a consistent manner. The facilitators and barriers to circular business models need to be well understood and addressed before innovation and competitiveness can be enhanced.
Possible synergies between the use of circular materials, climate change mitigation and halting biodiversity loss are increasingly recognized. However, such synergies require further integration within and between neutral, bio- and circular economy policies.
