The sporting goods chain will offer as an alternative, from July 3, bags made with the surplus textiles of the production of its articles.
Decathlon has announced today that it will eliminate all plastic and paper bags from the checkout lines of all its stores in Spain. The measure will be implemented from July 3 and with it the company plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by 45%, removing 338,000 kilos of plastic from circulation per year.
As an alternative, the company will offer customers bags made from the textile surpluses of the production of its items, for one euro. The income obtained from these sales will be used entirely for its annual environmental volunteering campaign in force since 2014.
“Our purpose is to offer sustainable solutions that allow our customers to make more responsible consumption decisions, proposing that every time they come to our stores they bring their own bag, given that reuse is the best circular economy strategy. For this reason, we are committed to scrap bags, made from the textile surpluses of our products. On the other hand, we will also make available to our users, free of charge, the cardboard boxes from our logistics so that they can be reused, “says Íñigo García, head of Sustainable Development at Decathlon.
The company began in 2011 its strategy to reduce the consumption of plastic bags, anticipating the regulations that came into force in 2018 and that requires charging them, which managed to reduce their consumption by 80%.
In 2015, it switched to using only 100% recycled plastic bags and on July 3 it will take the final step by eliminating all plastic and paper bags from its box lines.
