Ribera affirms that the US climate objectives generate a different dynamic

The Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, has valued positively this Thursday the announcement of the United States to achieve neutrality in carbon emissions by 2050, since “it generates a different dynamic in the international context”.

The US president confirmed his plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions “by half” in his country – between 50 and 52% – by 2030, during the beginning of the Leaders’ Summit on Climate through a virtual conference organized by the White House, which has the participation of forty international leaders including Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

For Ribera, it is a commitment that “deserves to be welcomed by all with great satisfaction” by recalling that there are still “many large issuers that have not updated their commitments.”

In addition, the minister and fourth vice president of the Spanish executive recalled that this announcement is in addition to the European agreement proclaimed this week between Parliament, Council and Commission to increase the ambition of the EU, “pending other similar announcements in the coming days.”

Regarding the Leaders’ Summit organized by Biden, he considers that it is a “clear symptom of his conviction about why the climate agenda should be at the center of the international political agenda”, as well as in the whole economic, business and financial debate.

In his opinion, the meeting responds to a demand and an “insistent pressure” on the part of the US citizens and companies themselves, who “considered that not having an adequate framework can mean that their economy is outdated”.

In this sense, Ribera has indicated that climate change has become “the main threat” economic and social for its inhabitants, so “it does not make sense that who is still considered a large power is not a responsible actor in the construction of global consensus.”

Regarding the EU, he has defended that it is in a position to “continue building bridges” and that its participation in this summit involves both the community institutions and the different countries whose leaders “will be present in a constructive way”.
