The national electricity system marked on Monday a new maximum of daily generation without carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent emissions, producing 710,937 megawatt hours (MWh) free of greenhouse gases, according to Red Eléctrica de España (REE). Thus, during this Monday, December 28, 84.7% of all electricity demanded in the Iberian Peninsula did not generate CO2 emissions, the highest share since Red Eléctrica has records (2007).
Specifically, this new record of generation without CO2 equivalent emissions exceeds the previous maximum, which was 707,022 MWh and was reached on March 6. The mix of energy without emissions includes those of wind, photovoltaic and hydraulic origin and other renewables, in addition to nuclear. Compared to these, those that originate in coal and gas do emit CO2 .
Wind energy, the main protagonist
Wind was the main technology in the system on Monday, breaking a record for peak instant generation at 2:28 p.m. with 19,588 megawatts (MW) at the peninsula level, driven by the front associated with the Bella storm.
An hour earlier, the set of renewables produced in Spain a total of 27,945 MWh, the largest amount since there are records, data that contributed to raise the weight of clean energy to 87% of the total mix.
Royal Decree
To promote the development of clean energy, just yesterday, at the proposal of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition, the Council of Ministers approved the royal decree that regulates the criteria and procedure for the granting of access and connection permits for both producers and consumers, which are a previous and necessary step for the installation of new renewable energy plants.
In a statement, the cabinet led by Teresa Ribera indicated that this royal decree “provides certainty and legal certainty to the energy regulatory framework, preparing it for the orderly deployment of renewables, while contributing to eliminate inefficiencies and speculative behaviors to guarantee the achievement of the objectives in energy policy.”
