Buying a car will be more expensive in 2022: this is the rise that comes on the registration tax

In the process of trying to rejuvenate the car fleet in Spain, drivers have joined with a new regulation that makes the price of registrations more expensive, especially in the face of the most polluting cars. An adaptation to the European system that has entered into force in this 2022 and on which special attention will have to be paid on one of the mandatory taxes for all vehicles.

When buying a new car just out of the factory, one of the charges that you always have to have in cost is the registration tax. A cost that is impossible to get rid of and that covers a tax according to your carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

That is, the most polluting cars and motorcycles pay more, with the clear objective of being a point of rejection of the acquisition of these vehicles and to favor sustainable energies. Something that for this 2022 will be even more restrictive, since the new update of the registration tax brackets has entered into force in Spain.

This is how the registration tax changes for 2022

A great change adapted to the European regulations that had been approved since 2018 and with the aim of entering into force in 2021, but that Congress paralyzed so as not to harm the automotive sector in the midst of the crisis due to covid-19 and the lack of chips for the manufacture of new cars.

Thus, this new measurement system is already in force, which is much more harmful to all vehicles since it puts the limit of exemption from the payment of registration tax on the emission of 120 grams per kilometer (before it was at 144). That is, in order not to pay, it will not be necessary to exceed 120 units or wield a series of conditions such as use for people with reduced mobility or for the transport of goods or passengers.

These are the new sections according to CO2 emission

On the other hand, the new tax brackets are also tightened on polluting emissions to be as follows:

– Vehicles with emissions of less than 120 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer traveled (gr/km) and motorcycles with emissions not exceeding 100 gr/km: they are exempt from paying any percentage for this concept (previously less than 144).

– Vehicles with emissions between 120 and 159 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled and motorcycles with emissions between 101 and 119 g / km: application of an increase on the sale price of 4.75% (previously between 144 and 191).

– Vehicles with emissions between 160 and 199 grams of CO2 per kilometer traveled and motorcycles with emissions between 120 and 139 g / Km: application of a tax of 9.75% (before 192 to 239).

– Vehicles with emissions of 200 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer traveled or more and motorcycles with emissions of 140 g / Km or more: add 14.75% to the sale price (before from 240).

All changes that according to the automotive sector will result in an increase in price for most new vehicles, since 40% of these will change from section to a higher one, while only 7% will be exempt from paying registration tax.
