Spain defends the ETS system of CO2 emissions in the EU

Spain has reaffirmed its support for the European emissions trading system, known as the EU ETS, as a key tool for reducing CO₂ emissions in the European Union. This mechanism sets an emissions cap for industrial and energy sectors, allowing companies to buy and sell emission allowances as needed. The Spanish government believes that the ETS has proven to be effective in driving decarbonisation, by putting a price on carbon and encouraging investment in clean technologies. Since its implementation, emissions in regulated sectors have decreased significantly, contributing to European climate goals. In addition, Spain defends the need to strengthen the system in the context of the European climate package, known as “Fit for 55”, which seeks to reduce emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
